The s407 visa is for designed for people who wish to participate in in training, aimed at improving their occupational skills, through participation in training in Australia with an Australian business, government agency or foreign government agency.
There are two eligibility pathways for the Subclass 407 Training visa, but all applicants need to be able to meet the following criteria:
- You must have turned 18 (or can demonstrate exceptional circumstances)
- You must have at least functional English
- Hold private health insurance
- Have access to sufficient funds to support themselves in Australia
- Genuinely intend to stay temporarily in Australia for the intended purpose
- Meet health and character requirements
Sponsorship by an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor is required, and the sponsor is required to provide a detailed, structured, individually based training program among other requirements.
- OCCUPATIONAL TRAINEES
To be eligible, the nominee needs to meet one of the following criteria:
- Training required to obtain registration, membership or a licence to work in Australia or in the applicant's home country home country, so that their skills are enhanced
- Training in a gazetted occupation - the applicant must have worked on a full time basis in the nominated occupation for at least 12 of the last 24 months before making the application, and the training is designed to enhance the skills of the applicant
- Training that is designed to enhance capacity building overseas through either up to 6 months of practical experience, research or observation is required to obtain an overseas qualification, or training that is supported by a government agency in the applicant's home country.
Occupational training would generally require at least 70% of the training to be on-the-job versus classroom training.
This is applicable to high level managerial positions, and requires training to be relevant to the applicant's existing experience and skills. Applicants would need to show:
- the nominee has an overseas employer and is in a managerial or professional position in relation to the overseas employer; and
- the occupational training is relevant to, and consistent with, the development of the managerial or professional skills of the nominee; and
- the occupational training will provide skills and expertise relevant to, and consistent with, the business background of the overseas employer of the nominee; and
- the primary form of the occupational training is the provision of face-to-face teaching in a classroom or similar environment.
